The Urban Boys: Discovery of Five Senses by K.N. Smith is hands down one of the most original and well-crafted YA paranormal novels I’ve read in a long time! I was completely drawn in from the opening pages, and absolutely loved the author’s use of description of the different scenery and locales, and her attention to detail, especially with the characters. We feel transported not only into the various characters’ heads, but the places they are, and it was a fun escape from reality. This novel covers so, so much it’s impossible to sum up, and it was interesting to see how it all tied together but there will still be more to come. An epic literary feat, to be certain, well written and with beautiful narrative. I was really impressed and would recommend this book with the highest of praise to fans of YA adventure/action/light fantasy.

Read the Prologue and fasten your seat-belts! “The URBAN BOYS: Discovery of the Five Senses” is the kind of thrill ride you’d expect from a seasoned action and adventure novelist, not in a first novel by a writer just entering this genre. The URBAN BOYS really grabs you. It not only focuses readers on the battle between good and evil but the frailties of families that can be torn apart even by the heroic, selfless acts by our young heroes. As much as anything else, the beauty of the scenes described, the eerie, mysterious source of the boys’ new power, and the suspense you will feel in every engagement they have with evil combatants they confront will rivet you to every page. The URBAN BOYS creates a whole new world of emotions, suspense, danger and drama sure to please those who like the pages of a book to excite and engage them. It’s a great read!

An interesting journey into the lives of the boys with sensory super powers. Full of action and battles, with others and their own fate. I liked this story and found it very striking. The intrigue and impeccable way the story was written gripped this reader, and I liked that I could not predict the end or knew what would happen next. The characters were young adults but anyone who loves a good action super hero-esq story would dive right into this one. Nothing like a rollercoaster adventure that keeps me turning the pages!

I have to say that it was quite a long time since a novel tickled my imagination. The book asked me to visualize every setting; the kids in their school, the football battlefield, the swaying grasses in the preserve, the devastated Sandry Lake, and the fight scenes. I am deeply hoping for the sequel!

In a time when young adult fiction is generally finding itself relegated to teen romance coupled with supernatural themes that are oftentimes tied down by typically dramatic interpersonal relationships and overly predictable plotlines, The Urban Boys comes along and breathes life into the genre by rekindling some of the magic that makes young adult fiction relatable and engrossing for young people, while offering older readers the proper dose of nostalgia and captivation to make it more than worthwhile. The author does a fine job in creating a fictional setting that is believably animated throughout the pages. When reading my next YA fiction novel, I would hope it will be one as fascinating, refreshing and entertaining as The Urban Boys.

The Urban Boys is a paranormal trip following a ragtag gang of young men. Each youth is thoughtful and engaging and it was a delight to read their transformative progression—from humble starts to tackling a power perhaps greater than themselves. I found “The Urban Boys” to be very entertaining and exciting. What stood out to me the most about this read besides the vivid writing style, is definitely how well-constructed each of the main characters are. They all have a very complex nature and a strong foundation to each of their personalities, and as well as this, they each have their own defining flaws that contrast with their strengths – which, in turn, makes them seem quite realistic and dynamic. Overall, I am quite impressed with author K.N. Smith and hope to see more in the future.

What impressed me the most here was that I thought that K.N. Smith’s writing style has the confidence and delightful quirkiness of a much more seasoned pro… was a bit surprised to see this is her first novel. The characters had that elusive ‘flavor’ that only comes when they are fully realized and fleshed out, something that is not easily done, especially in a novel of this depth and complexity, and the prose was lyrical and lush… almost poetic. Beautifully mesmerizing and wonderfully addicting!

From the opening pages of “The Urban Boys” I knew it would be different from the books I’ve been reading lately and I was right! Ms. Smith sets of the scene and characters in a skillful way that not only draws us right in, but creates great visualizations (like we are watching a mini-series on TV as all the events play out) and elicits genuine emotional investments. An interesting and diverse cast of characters, along with several intriguing plotlines interwoven against unique, dynamic setting makes this a memorable read.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, stunningly characterized tale of adventure, unquestioning loyalty and strong bonds among good friends, look no further than The Urban Boys by author K.N. Smith. It’s the kind of book that you won’t be able to put down. The author’s compelling writing style is wonderfully evocative, painting compelling word pictures at every turn. Finally, events come to a head and, in a climactic last scene, the evil entrenched in the small town has it out with the combined forces for good. It’s a finale you won’t soon forget. This is a fully developed, well-written novel that will exceed your expectations. Ultimately, it conveys strong messages about trust, loyalty, and inspiration. I award The Urban Boys five stars-plus. The Urban Boys took me up and down the most exciting, twisty, curvy roads on the planet. This is truly an adventure filled novel that gets more exciting as the pages turn. This book is hard to put down once you start reading so block out ample time before beginning. I’ll start by saying, I definitely place this novel alongside “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” for a couple of reasons. Although the story lines have nothing to do with one another the main characters all cater to the same age range with the door wide open for a series. While the author manages to capture every detail in every scene placing you right in the middle of your imagination, the characters are also well thought out with descriptive traits of their own. I enjoyed every minute of it and am convinced you will, too. This is undeniably an author to keep your eye on!

I LOVE to read, but live a hugely busy life. It gets more complicated upon that rare occasion when a book is so captivating, so enthralling, that it is impossible to walk away. With only definitive hours in a day, something has to give. For me, that was sleep! And it was worth every sacrificed minute. “The Urban Boys” was the grand slam home run and exceeded my wildest expectations and I would bet, maybe yours, as well. Totally new concepts and a rich crew of characters – good, bad and ugly… and suspenseful twists that keep you guessing, and such beautiful, strong writing! What makes this book particularly fascinating is the manner in which the community in which the characters exist is itself a living, conscious entity. In this respect, the book has a strong fantasy element to it. The writer makes great use of backstories and subtext to lend depth, subtlety, and mystery to the unfolding of the story as it vacillates from surreality to reality. Additionally, the writer introduces poetic elements into the narrative, placing the story into a mythical context, each of the characters’ actions being a response to fate as they struggle to reach a balance between the demands of normalcy and the pull of destiny. I would recommend this book to readers of fantasy, mystery, and even fans of certain kinds of comic books which explore how the introduction of new powers or abilities put pressures upon those who acquire them to undergo intensive personal transformations in order to accommodate the responsibilities these entail. Five stars!

K.N. Smith has an incredible way with words; her descriptions are vivid; you see what the characters are seeing, you feel what they are feeling; you feel like you are there. I found the book very hard to put down, as I had to know what the outcome for each of these characters would be. This is an excellent book; it makes you feel, it makes you think, and it makes you think outside the box. K.N. Smith wasn’t afraid to take chances, and it pays off.

“The Urban Boys” is wonderful book in which K.N. Smith sweeps the reader away into each of the characters with their exceptional abilities. She also has the strong literary skills to keep the reader totally engaged throughout the entire story, and that is no small feat considering the various multi layered plotlines, diverse set of characters, and wildly fluctuating events. Good characters… good writing… good plots. I am ready for the next one!

This is an excellent novel that captured my attention from the beginning, pulled me in, and never once let go. K.N. Smith is a hugely talented writer who knows how to grab and keep our attention! Each scene was riveting, imaginative, and flowed smoothly from one to the next. The descriptions were very strong, and I mean with the author’s word choice… unique and powerful. She has a natural gift for creating a well-thought out story and developing deeply memorable characters with a great positive message. Recommend for ages 13 and up (even adults!).

I found myself just wanting to read more… and more… and more… and I couldn’t believe it when I realized I was totally hooked, and even totally enjoyed the exciting paranormal and action scenes! But seriously, I felt transported to another world just by experiencing the lives of these incredible characters who are so true to life and authentic-feeling, yet unlike any I’ve met before.
December 14, 2015 – Amazon Customer – Good Book, Needs a Sequel (4 / 5)
The author of this book really has a mastery of descriptive metaphors and it was quite enjoyable traversing the characters lives and families. I felt that I need more of the stories on the families and the interactions with the dark side. I would love to read a sequel with more adventures from the Urbanboys as adults. I really enjoyed the overall premise and story because there are so many ways that the boys/men’s adventures can evolve. Thank you for this thought provoking well written literary work.

Five friends do something considered taboo by the townsfolk and enter the mysterious, forest-like preserve. But something otherworldly awaits them among the trees. Yet just as the five can then sense each other, so, too, can three others sense them, and one of the trio is a killer. Smith’s book blends action and mystery with elements of the paranormal. Additionally, the novel overflows with positive thematic pointers relating to the importance of family, honesty, etc. The presence of these moments of encouragement make her story worth reading.

Destiny plays a unique role in the lives of five young friends who unbeknownst to them will meet doom, gloom and unspoken danger. This incredibly compelling novel will leave you spellbound, wondering if the boys will survive the wrath of Druth, the dastardly, evil antagonist wreaking havoc from chapter to chapter. To add to the drama, upon meeting a dark stranger, their lives will never be the same! The Urban Boys is definitely one of this year’s most exciting reads!

The brotherly bond of five teenage boys is tested when they are exposed to an energy source that heightens their senses. Destined to be pursuers of good, together they begin a journey to maturity as they embrace and fully realize their new-found powers despite looming threat from a vengeful villain. This action-packed page-turner made me feel like I was a part of the boys’ adventure in Sandry Lake and a protector of Danville Heights. One will identify with the characters’ joy, fear, anxiety, pride and a variety of emotions because of the author’s ability to involve the reader into every scene. I highly recommend this to young adults and adults alike!
